Comey Speaks: Former FBI director says Trump is morally unfit to be president

With a book about to be released, James Comey, the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), was interviewed by ABC and offered a scathing assessment of the man who fired him -- President Donald Trump.

Comey was fired by Trump in 2017, a move that set in motion the appointment of the special counsel's office, now led by Robert Mueller. Now liberated from his position at the helm of the FBI, Comey was speaking candidly about the president.  In the interview, Comey accused the president of chronic lying, suggested that the president may have  obstructed justice, and asserted that Donald Trump was morally unfir to be president.

In a poignent statement, Comey said, "I don't buy this stuff about him being mentally incompetent or early stages of dementia. I don't think he's medically unfit to be president. I think he's morally unfit to be president.  He added,
"Our president must embody respect and adhere to the values that are at the core of this country. The most important being truth. This president is not able to do that."

For his part, President Trump was not about to allow Comey to have his say without weighing in with his own pronouncements.  The president repeatedly referred to the FBI director he fired as "a slimeball” and via his favorite social media outlet, Twitter, declared that Comey  belonged in jail, accusing the fired FBI director of lying to Congress and leaking classified information.  Trump also predicted via tweet that Comey would be remembered  as “the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!” Trump also took aim as Comey's intellect, saying “He is not smart!”

While not quite so vociferous is his emotional deployment of social media, Comey nonetheless used Twitter to take aim at the president. He unfavorably compared Trump to the two president he served before -- Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama.  He tweeted: “My book is about ethical leadership & draws on stories from my life & lessons I learned from others. 3 presidents are in my book: 2 help illustrate the values at the heart of ethical leadership; 1 serves as a counterpoint.”
